If you have the time and just want to wander around a pretty place its, also, the place the be.
Why not start by walking to The La Jolla Historical Society located in the original Ellen Scripps house on Prospect St.
From the Historical Society, after learning about the history of La Jolla and browsing through the pictures of when La Jolla was the destination spot for artists and then actors from Hollywood ….
…. take a walk north on Prospect to the La Valencia Hotel .This hotel, built in 1926, has been declared an historic site.
The "Pink Lady," as it is lovingly called, sits looking over the blue pacific. Why not have lunch in the dining room looking out to the ocean or on the lovely, sunfilled patio?
After lunch why not take a ride to the northern part of La Jolla. You will find the University of California, San Diego campus. The branch of the University of California system is home to many Nobel Prize winners in addition to a number of other award winners. Wander the campus and find the interesting sculptures scattered around the campus and gaze at the famous Geisel Library. This unique building is the U.C.S.D. logo.
Across from the University overlooking the ocean is the world famous Salk Institute. Scientists at "The Salk" have made break throughs in a number of diseases and will, hopefully, develop cures for those diseases. "The Salk" was designed by famed architect Louis Kahn. Seeing the architecture alone is worth the visit.
The Torrey Pines Glider Port is next to "The Salk." It is here that, depending on the winds, that people jump off the cliff and glide up and down the coast of La Jolla. It is fun to watch a glider "take off" and fun to watch them glide, seemingly without effort.
While in the northern part of La Jolla, visit the Scripps Institute of Oceanography Aquarium. This is the arm of the well known institute that is open to the public to educate its visitors about our ocean and its marine life.
If staying near the university, The Estancia Hotel and Spa is a perfect place to stay. Enjoy a massage after wandering the village, the campus at the university and then gazing at the view from the campus of Salk Institute. You will have earned the relaxation.
LA JOLLA has restaurants of all varieties and tastes …
There is a Jack in the Box for one palate and GEORGE’S, a gourmet restaurant overlooking the BLUE PACIFIC for the other end of the spectrum.
Within the spectrum of variety, LA JOLLA offers it all. RAPPONGI, down the street from GEORGE’S, serves tapas, sushi, salads and great Pan Asian food for lunch or dinner. Sit by the fireplace and have a drink, relaxing before your meal.
Or move up the street to TAPENADE for French cuisine.
THE COTTAGE is a great place to have lunch any day, except on the rare occasion when it rains. The sidewalk leading to the outdoor patio is usually filled with locals and tourists waiting to enjoy a salad, sandwich or hot lunch. In late May, until October, dinner is served. There is room inside if you want to sit inside, most people prefer outside and the warm LA JOLLA sun.
Finding a place that will please your palate is a given in LA JOLLA. The choices are varied, as are the prices. Once again, wander the streets of the village and see for yourself.
